About this game
Snake is a simple idea that never gets old. You steer a glowing green snake around a 21 by 18 grid, collecting the bright food that pops up at random. Every bite makes the snake longer, and that is exactly what makes the game tricky: as your body grows there is less room to turn, and both the walls and your own tail are instantly fatal. Each piece of food is worth 10 points plus a bonus that rises with the length of your snake, so a long run scores much faster than a short one. The pace picks up as you grow, too, starting relaxed and speeding up until the snake moves twice as fast as when you began. There are no levels and no extra lives. A single mistake ends the run, and the only goal is to beat your previous best. If your score is good enough, you can add a name of up to six characters to the global leaderboard.
Controls
- Keyboard: use the arrow keys or W, A, S and D to steer.
- Phone or tablet: use the on-screen D-pad under the board.
- The snake cannot turn straight back on itself, so a 180-degree turn is ignored.
- Press PLAY to start, and again after a crash to jump straight into a new run.
Tips and strategy
- Play the edges while the snake is short, then work inward. Travelling along a wall keeps the middle of the grid free for later.
- Sweep the grid in long, wide loops instead of zig-zagging at random. A tidy pattern leaves fewer pockets where your tail can trap you.
- You cannot reverse into yourself, so plan a two-step turn (for example up, then left) whenever you need to double back.
- Check where the food is before you commit to a route. Grabbing food tucked into a corner is only safe if you can see a clear way out afterwards.
- Slow your decisions, not your fingers. Once the snake passes roughly 30 segments it is at top speed, so think a few turns ahead.
- On a touchscreen, tap the D-pad slightly early. A press only takes effect on the next step, so queue your turn before you reach the corner.
